Summary
“Animal experiment” is a computerized aid which can be used by the entire scientific staff of a laboratory. The resource is very easy to use and attractive in appearance. The program covers the most important topics of animal experimentation, but some sections, such as law, are restricted to application in Switzerland. Furthermore, some sections are not in English, but in German. Nevertheless, the “Animal experiment” program is a beneficial tool which fully contributes to implementation of the 3Rs concept into scien-tific research.
Description of the resource
“Animal experiment” is a computer program (CD-ROM) designed as an intensive course in animal experimentation. It is divided into six main sections:
Using the resource: user-friendliness and visual appearance
The reviewer experienced some difficulties with the installation of the program, but once installed, the CD-ROM is very easy to run. This resource is very attractive to work with, because of its clear lay-out and its interactiveness. The latter is emphasized by the implementation of a users notebook. Furthermore, the supplier provides a broad range of web-site links and an overview of relevant references (books, audiovisual resources,etc.). Of course this encourages the user to explore the topics discussed in the program.
One point of remark is the language. Although the user can choose between French, German and English on the main page, some sections (e.g. the glossary) and illustrations are entirely in German. Since English is the common language used in science, this should be adapted.
Applicability of the resource
The “Animal experiment” resource covers the most important topics in animal experimentation, such as a discussion of the 3Rs concept and its practical implementation into research. It can be used by the entire scientific staff of a laboratory to prepare animal experiments in an appropriate way. Foreknowledge is not required, since all topics are discussed in detail. Therefore, it can be used for undergraduate students as well, both for independent use and classical use. The latter promotes teacher-student interaction, since some topics can be discussed in class. This in turn contributes to the general awareness of animal experimentation, co-operative working and the learning of laboratory skills. Besides , the CD-ROM can be used for rapid screening of topics.
Although the information provided by the resource is universally applicable, some sections are restricted to use within Switzerland, such as the law section. Furthermore, as mentioned before, the glossary section can only be used by German researchers.
Contribution of the resource to the implementation of the 3Rs concept
EURCA provides useful information concerning specific alternative resources, one of which the “Animal experiment” computer program is a very good example. In combination with the general information as provided on the EURCA website, it promotes further implementation of the 3Rs principle into scientific research. The program contributes to refinement of animal experimentation, but also to reduction and replacement, although in an indirect way.Services provided by the supplier
The reviewer did not resort to the services provided by the supplier. Undoubtedly, appropriate advice will be provided in case of difficulty. Both the printed support materials, accompanying the software, and the product description on the EURCA website include contact addresses.
